Bryan Station did the dirty work to win the 42nd District girls' basketball title Friday night at Henry Clay.
Dominating the rebounds and getting down on defense, the Lady Defenders dusted off Scott County 64-54.
Brittany Williams, a 5-foot-10 junior, came off the bench to lead the winners with 15 points and 13 rebounds, including nine of Station's 26 offensive rebounds.
Overall, the Defenders outrebounded the Cardinals 54-40, 26-17 on the offensive glass.
"That was the main thing we wanted to do," Defenders Coach Donna Murphy said. "We wanted to control the boards and play defense, and just try to keep the pressure up the entire game."
Both squads move on to the 11th Region tournament.
Bryan Station (15-14) split the regular-season series with the Cardinals.
Victoria McCoy added 14 points for the Defenders. Serena Sandusky had 13 points and three assists. DeShante Clay scored 10 points. Hallie Crumbie had nine points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Scott County (13-19) was led by Audriana Christopher with 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Tereka Guyn chipped in with 10 points.
"Teamwork and playing hard. ... We had to play great defense," Williams said in identifying the keys to victory.
Although turnovers were nearly even — 17 for the Defenders, 18 for the Cards — Bryan Station finished with a 19-6 edge in points that resulted from errors.
Williams scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.
"Yeah, it came down to the wire," she said. "They were coming back."
The Cardinals never made it all the way back, though.
Trailing 33-25 at halftime, Scott County pulled to within 35-33 when Christopher scored on a fast break.
Bryan Station responded with an 11-2 spurt to lead 46-35.
The first six of those points came at the free-throw line — two each by Sandusky, La'bianca Frazier and Clay. Crumbie added a rebound basket and McCoy nailed the Defenders' only three-pointer of the game.
The Defenders repeatedly got to the foul line, where they made 25 of 36 shots. (Scott County was 15-for-23.).
The lead was 50-43 through three quarters, and the Cardinals never came closer than five points the rest of the way.
"I was just pleased with the way they played," Murphy said of her team. "They came back and played hard, they were focused and we did what we had to do."
