GEORGETOWN — Bryan Station had a plan Thursday.
A plan that played out like a charm as the Lady Defenders whipped host Scott County 71-51 to win the girls' 42nd District basketball tournament title.
"They did what we needed them to do," Lady Defenders Coach Donna Murphy said. "They played great defense, they controlled the boards and they played smart."
Bryan Station (18-10) and Scott County (20-11) both advance to the 11th Region Tournament, which begins Wednesday at Eastern Kentucky University.
Victoria McCoy led the Defenders with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Serena Sandusky had 16 points, four assists and four steals.
The big spark, though, came from La'bianca Frazier, making a spot start in place of the injured Lakeysha Stennis, who has a sprained ligament in her thumb.
"Labby stepped up and played like an All-American senior," Murphy said.
Frazier, 5-foot-6 senior, scored all of her 15 points in the first half, played all 32 minutes and earned tourney MVP honors.
"It feels great. We finally played good tonight," said Frazier, who runs a quarter mile in 56.44 seconds and plans to compete for either Kentucky, Louisville or Indiana in track. "We wanted to come out with a win."
Deshante Clay added 12 points for the winners. Hallie Crumbie had four points and nine rebounds.
Laura Szorenyi, an exchange student from Hungary, paced the Cardinals with 14 points. Iman Guy and Tereka Guyn scored 10 each, with Guy grabbing six rebounds.
Bryan Station battered Scott County 42-25 on the boards and shot 28-for-47 (49.1 percent) to the Cards' 21-for-51 (41.2).
Frazier scored Bryan Station's first two points on, of all things, a put-back.
"I got high in the air and I was just like 'yes,'" said Frazier, who said that the key to the win was "making our layups and playing as a team."
Scott led briefly, but McCoy's fast-break bucket with 2:12 left in the first quarter put Bryan Station ahead to stay, 13-11.
The Defenders led 19-13 after a quarter and closed the half on an 8-0 run to make it 35-22. The Cards never came closer in the second half.
