Henry Clay's girls team, which led by 18 late in the third quarter, saw its lead shrink to three with 21 seconds left, but the Lady Blue Devils prevailed 45-39 over visiting Sayre in the 42nd District tournament opener.
Sayre trailed 42-29 with 4:48 to play when it went on a 10-0 run to close the gap to 42-39. Gabby Bowie got it started with two baskets and a pair of free throws and Molly Manella finished it off with a basket and two free throws.
T'Laya Lyvers, who had 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead Henry Clay, stopped the run with a layup with 15 seconds to go and Nakyira Joyce added a free throw to to account for the final margin.
Hannah Young added six points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Lady Blue Devils.
Manella finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Spartans. Bowie struggled from the field (3-for-10), but she finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots.
East Jessamine 74, West Jessamine 43 (46th): Emma Young led the Jaguars with 17 points at Mercer County.
No. 9 Ballard 72, Kentucky Country Day 18 (28th): Javonna Layfield scored 18 points in the Bruins' win at over Country Day at Louisville Christian.
Montgomery County 77, Bourbon County 43: The Indians jumped out to a 19-point lead after one quarter en route to a big win at home. Sarah Arnett had 20 points.
Pikeville 67, East Ridge 60 (59th): Rachel Potter scored 32 points for the host Lady Panthers.
Mercer County 89, Burgin 52 (46th): The Titans hit 16 three-pointers in a win at home. Heidi Huffman scored 22 points.
No. 5 Scott County 69, Sayre 27 (42nd): The Cardinals, fifth in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, held the Spartans to 22.2 percent from the field and rolled to a win at Henry Clay.
The Cardinals wasted no time putting the Spartans away. A field goal by Trent Gilbert gave Scott County a 4-3 lead and started a 22-5 run. Gilbert finished with 18 points and Tony Martini had 10 rebounds.
