Covington Catholic, 10th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, outscored No. 7 Holmes by six in the fourth quarter en route to a 56-51 victory in the 9th Region boys' finals at Northern Kentucky on Monday night.
The Colonels (29-2), who avenged their loss to the Bulldogs in last year's region finals, led 19-10 after one quarter. But Holmes rallied to take a 37-36 lead through three.
Covington Catholic senior Nick Ruthsatz led the way with 24 points, five assists and four rebounds. He was 7-for-12 from the field.
Quentin Chames led Holmes (28-6) with 16 points and nine rebounds. James "Beetle" Bolden added 15 points, but he was 3-for-19 from three-point range.
No. 8 Knott County Central 56, Breathitt County 52 (14th): The Patriots, led by Cameron Justice's 19 points, held on for a win in the semifinals at Perry Central. Wes Noble had 31 points and six rebounds for Breathitt County.
Montgomery County 69, Augusta 58 (10th): Bryan Wallace had 22 points and Darius Jones scored 16 and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Indians to a win in the semifinals at Mason County. Augusta senior Brent Bach had 34 points.
Campbell County 63, Harrison County 53 (10th): Corey Holbrook scored 19 points in the Camels' semifinal victory at Mason County. The Thorobreds' DJ Jenkins also had 19 points.
Johnson Central 92, Prestonsburg 40 (15th): The Golden Eagles outscored the Blackcats by 22 in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth to roll to a victory in the semifinals in Pikeville.
Slade McPeek led Johnson Central with 18 points and Prestonsburg's Dalton Frasure had 20.
Shelby Valley 72, Lawrence County 60 (15th): Cody Belter scored 14 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter in the semifinals in Pikeville. Tyler Carr added 19 points for the Wildcats and Robert Dalton had 18 for Lawrence County.
