Fayette County school officials said completion of the new Lafayette High School football stadium will be delayed only slightly, after the school board agreed Monday night to switch contractors on the project.
The original completion date of mid-June 2010 will be pushed back, but only by about 30 days, officials said.
The new Lafayette stadium should be ready by mid-July next year, in time for the opening of football season, said Mary Wright, the school district's chief operating officer.
The Fayette County Board of Education initially awarded a contract for the new football field to Venture One Construction for about $4.1 million. But the company recently asked to withdraw from the contract, apparently because of a calculation error on its original bid, Wright said.
Never miss a local story.
On Monday night, the school board essentially re-awarded the contract, this time to Judy Construction Co., the next-lowest bidder, for about $4.8 million. The move is subject to approval from the Kentucky Department of Education.
Wright said Judy Construction officials are prepared to move ahead as soon as they file paperwork with the state education department; that could happen sometime Tuesday. Work on the new field could begin quickly, once state approval is secured, she said.
"It's going to happen," Wright said.
Lafayette is playing all its games off-campus this year while the new field is under construction.
