Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the last teams in the state to kick off its football season. The Bulldogs played Louisville Eastern in the last game of the iHigh Fayette County Football Frenzy at Bryan Station late Saturday night.
For Dunbar, it probably wasn't worth the wait.
Eastern, which beat Jeffersonville, Ind., last week, rolled to a 29-0 halftime lead on its way to a 45-6 victory over the Bulldogs. There was a running clock after the Eagles took their 45-point lead late in the third quarter.
Eastern quarterback Cody Wolfe had a big night. He completed 13 of 16 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for two scores.
Never miss a local story.
Wolfe sliced up Dunbar's defense in the first half when he hit on 11 of 13 throws for 187 yards, including touchdowns to Tre Harrison, Shane Fields and Austin Kessler.
Dunbar didn't generate much offense until the closing minutes. It had only 40 yards through three quarters.
The Bulldogs found a late spark, though. Junior quarterback Emory Thompson threw a 33-yard TD pass to Tyler Smith with three minutes left in the game.
Thompson finished the night 4-for-10 passing for 64 yards, one TD and one interception. Brandyn Duncan took some snaps in the last quarter and wound up leading the Bulldogs with 42 yards rushing.
