D'Andre Mack isn't the biggest player on the field by a long shot.
He just plays big.
Mack ran for three touchdowns and returned a kickoff for another Friday night to lead No. 10 Bryan Station to a 49-26 road victory over Lexington Catholic.
"I give everything to my O-line," said Mack, listed at 5-foot-8, 165 pounds. "Without them I wouldn't have done what I did tonight."
Never miss a local story.
Mack finished with 91 yards on 12 carries, scoring twice from 3 yards out, once for 20 yards and again on an 86-yard kick return,
"You've got to have the right mindset," Mack said of his willingness to run up the middle. "You can't sit there and be told you're little and then take it to heart. You've got to tell yourself you're not too little; you're going to do great things."
Quarterback Andre Davis complemented that line nicely by completing 18 of 23 passes for 199 yards and two scores. He also ran 11 times for 72 yards and a TD.
"I just believe in my receivers," Davis said. "I knew they were going to the right place, so I just get to them, get it in their hands. And everything was going well."
Bryan Station (2-2) had the game in hand by halftime with a 35-6 cushion.
"We learned two valuable lessons from (earlier games). Playing disciplined football and doing the little things right," Defenders Coach Frank Parks said. "So we had to just make some changes. And everyone bought in, understood what we needed to do, and came out here and played pretty well tonight."
Catholic came on in the second half and actually outgained Bryan Station overall, 478 yards to 362, picking up 374 on the ground.
The Knights' Jaylen Jones ran 33 times for 174 yards and two scores. Andy Thompson added 23 carries for 165 yards and a TD.
"They're a really good football team," Catholic Coach Mark Perry said. "Hats off to them. Obviously they came out in the first half and played well, and we didn't. I was proud — I thought we grew up some in the second half. I thought our kids kept fighting. That's a good sign for things to come. But we've got to get healthy and we've got to get better, and we've got to play like that for four quarters."
Davis threw for two first-half scores and ran for another, and Mack ran in two more.
Catholic (1-3) had a chance to gain the upper hand early when Braxton Couch recovered a Defenders fumble near midfield.
The Knights drove to the Station 11-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Bryan Station responded with a 12-play, 89-yard drive, opening the scoring when Mack ran in from 3 yards.
Then it was a Catholic punt, followed by a Defenders touchdown — three times in a row.
Davis found Marcus Floyd for a 17-yard score with 2:09 left in the first quarter, and Mack ran for his second 3-yard TD for a 21-0 lead with 26 seconds left in the quarter.
Davis took it himself from 12 yards out with 10:03 left in the half.
Catholic's lone first half scoring drive was a long one — 80 yards in 19 plays, capped by Reese Ryan's 9-yard run on fourth-and-four.
The Knights still had no answer for Bryan Station's offense, though, which tacked on a 4-yard TD pass from Davis to Tequan Claitt.
Thompson's 41-yard TD run to open the second-half scoring gave Catholic some life, but Mack returned the ensuing kickoff all the way.
"The coaches told me to look for it," Mack said. "We do it a lot in practice — we just look for a seam, and I caught it. I just looked up. I saw a big gap to the left, and I saw my blocking peel out on me, so I just figured I might as well hit it full speed."
Jones added TD runs of 7 and 5 yards, but Mack had a 20-yarder in between to keep Station comfortably in control.
Angel Gonzalez led Bryan Station's defense with nine tackles. Andy Hickey had 10 for Catholic.
