Eclipse Award champion Groupie Doll, who was purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for $3.1 million at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale on Wednesday, will remain in training and is being pointed for the Grade I Cigar Mile to be run Nov. 30th at Aqueduct.
“When I purchased Groupie Doll my sole intention was for her to be retired and become a mom.” Pope said in a news release. “However, after spending time with her and speaking with her previous connections, I felt that she may still want to run a few more races. I asked Dr. Larry Bramlage to go over her from her nose to her tail and he felt there was no reason for her career to end now. Everyone who has been around Groupie Doll says she is rounding into the best form of her career, and I feel the racing public deserves to see superstars run so long as they are happy and 100 percent sound.”
Trainer Buff Bradley, who co-bred and campaigned Groupie Doll along with his father, Fred, will continue to condition Groupie Doll as long as she stays in training.
“To insure that Groupie Doll continues to receive the exact same care and attention to which she is accustomed, I have made the decision that Buff Bradley and his team will oversee the remainder of her racing career,” Pope added. “It is only right that he continue as her trainer and I am delighted and honored that Buff has agreed to share this exciting time with me.”
Never miss a local story.
Groupie Doll is coming off her second consecutive victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita last weekend. The 5-year-old daughter of Bowman’s Band has arrived in New York and is resting comfortably after her eventful past couple of weeks.
Groupie Doll finished second in the Cigar Mile last season, beaten just a nose at the line by Travers Stakes winner Stay Thirsty. She is slated to face a salty bunch in the Cigar Mile – which would be her fifth start this year – including Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents and Grade I winners Alpha and Verrazano.
