Austin Ruhe's career got off to a great start this week.
Ruhe, an apprentice jockey from Lexington riding in New Mexico, won his first professional horse race on his first professional mount at The Downs at Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Ruhe won the seventh race aboard 13-1 shot No Walkin' Joe, a 9-year-old gelding owned and trained by Brent Swopes.
Ruhe, 18, was born in Lexington and is a graduate of Bryan Station High School.
Ruhe and No Walkin' Joe lagged behind early, angled out seven wide through the turn, gained ground in the stretch and beat Unremitting by a length and paid $28.20 to win the 7-furlong claiming race.
However, Ruhe will not go undefeated for his career. The apprentice rode his second career mount, El Maximo, to a ninth-place finish in Wednesday's ninth race.
