■ Canadian champion Fatal Bullet, runner-up in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Sprint, set himself up for a return engagement this year thanks to a half-length victory over Capt. Candyman Can in the Grade III Phoenix Stakes over 6 furlongs Friday.
The Red Bullet gelding dueled with Ez Dreamer through early fractions and stuck a head in front during a prolonged stretch drive. Capt. Candyman Can unleashed a strong drive in deep stretch but fell short. Fatal Bullet won in 1:09.
"We needed that one to confirm to us that we belong with those horses," owner Danny Dion said. "We'll be back for the Breeders' Cup."
