My Boy Jack, with Kent Desormeaux aboard, won the Grade III, $500,000 Southwest Stakes for 3-year-olds at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Monday and picked up 10 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard standings.
Trained by Keith Desormeaux and ridden by his brother and three-time Kentucky Derby-winner Kent, My Boy Jack prevailed in the 1 1/16-mile race by 4½ lengths over Combatant in 1:46.00 on a muddy track. Sporting Chance was third and favored Mourinho was fourth. My Boy Jack returned $19.60, $8.20, and $5.20 across the board.
The Southwest Stakes concluded the 19-race “Prep Season” portion of the lead-up to the Derby. The 16-race “Championship Series,” which began Saturday with Bravazo’s victory in the Risen Star at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, continues on Saturday, March 3, with the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
