Hoops hysteria Friday reached the storied Three Chimneys Farm, where 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown will be known as Big Blue for the rest of the NCAA Tournament.
"Horses and hoops are part of the fingerprint of Kentucky, and you'll find no shortage of UK fans at Three Chimneys," said Case Clay, president of the Woodford County farm.
The stallion, winner of seven of eight career starts including the Derby and Preakness, was paraded around the barn for a news conference Friday wearing a custom-made blue halter with a brass name plate that read Big Blue. The name plate on his stall door has been changed to Big Blue for the weekend.
The Derby winner has a white birth mark on his left side that was painted Wildcat blue for the weekend. For the record, Clay said, the Derby winner has allergies, so the blue spot was painted with hypo-allergenic shampoo.
Never miss a local story.
After basketball mania has calmed down, the blue halter will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Kentucky Children's Hospital.
