Dubai Sky, winner of the Grade III Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on March 21, underwent surgery Saturday and is off the Triple Crown trail after suffering a fracture in his left hind cannon bone during a routine gallop at Churchill Downs.
Doug Cauthen, vice chairman for Three Chimneys Farm which co-owns Dubai Sky along with Besilu Stables, said via text message to the Herald-Leader that Dr. Larry Bramlage of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital performed surgery on the son of Candy Ride on Saturday afternoon. Cauthen added that the bay colt was "resting comfortably" and that the prognosis is good for recovery.
Trained by Bill Mott, Dubai Sky won the Spiral by 21/4 lengths to earn 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. The victory marked his fourth straight win from five career starts, with his first four outings all coming on turf.
Given that Dubai Sky had yet to run over a dirt surface, Cauthen said last week the plan was to train the colt at Churchill Downs and decide whether he would move forward to the Kentucky Derby once they had an idea of how he handled the main track.
