It doesn’t appear that the Houston Astros plan on calling up former University of Kentucky star AJ Reed to the majors.
Reed, who leads all of minor league baseball with 34 home runs and 121 RBI in stops at Class A Advanced Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi, will instead play for the Glendale Desert Dogs in in the Arizona Fall League.
Preliminary rosters for the league were announced on Tuesday. Reed will play with Corpus Christi in the Texas League playoffs. The Arizona Fall league, an offseason league that includes many of the top prospects in the minors, starts on Oct. 13.
Reed isn't the only former UK star set to play in the fall league. There's five in all.
Seattle Mariners starter James Paxton, who has missed most of the season with a finger injury, will play for Peoria.
He was 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA in 10 starts with Seattle before getting hurt. Paxton has made two rehab appearances at Triple-A Tacoma, and he is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA in 3-2/3 innings.
Former Western Hills and UK standout J.T. Riddle, now part of the Miami Marlins organization, will play for Mesa.
The infielder has batted .283 with five home runs and 29 RBI across three stops this season at Class A Advanced Jupiter, Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans.
Pitchers Taylor Rogers and Chandler Shepherd are on Scottsdale's roster.
Rogers, a Minnesota Twins prospect, is 9-12 with a 4.19 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 161 innings for Triple-A Rochester.
Shepherd, also a former Lawrence County standout, was 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA and one save for Boston Red Sox's Class A Greenville squad. He moved up to Class A Advanced Salem, where he is 0-2 with a 3.83 ERA and five saves.
