J.D. Martinez, the South Atlantic League's leading hitter, homered, doubled and singled as the Lexington Legends beat the West Virginia Power 5-4 Wednesday in Charleston.
Martinez, who had two RBI in raising his batting average to .361, pulled Lexington into a 3-3 tie with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning.
The Legends took the lead with another run in the sixth on a walk to Kody Hinze and singles by Jake Goebbert and Andy Simunic. West Virginia tied the score 4-4 on a solo home run by Jesus Brito in the bottom of the seventh.
The Legends (23-24) scored the winning run in the eighth. Goebbert smacked a one-out single to left. Simunic then drove a single to right that moved Goebbert to third, and Simunic moved to second on a fielding error. Aaron Bray grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Goebbert to score.
Goebbert threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the eighth, and West Virginia stranded a runner at third in the ninth.
Arcenio Leon (2-2), who pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Lexington, was the winning pitcher. Kirk Clark pitched the ninth and picked up his seventh save.
West Virginia reliever Zach Foster (3-1) was the losing pitcher.
The two teams wrap up their series in Charleston on Thursday night.
