Starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz pitched six scoreless innings Wednesday morning to lead the Lexington Legends to a 3-0 victory over the Hagerstown (Md.) Suns.
Wednesday's performance marked a breakthrough for Foltynewicz, the 19th overall pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. Foltynewicz went 5-11 with a 4.97 ERA for the Legends last season and lasted only 22⁄3 innings in Friday's season-opening loss at Greensboro in which he allowed six runs and eight hits.
The Legends had given up 54 runs through their first six games entering Wednesday.
Foltynewicz (1-1) struck out eight, walked two and scattered three hits Wednesday — harmless singles in the second, third and fourth innings.
Zach Johnson drove in Lexington's first run with a double in the fourth and its second run with a single in the sixth. Jordan Scott scored the Legends' final run in the eighth when he came home from third on a wild pitch.
Dayan Diaz picked up his first save of the season.
