Chris Epps' two-run double highlighted a three-run second inning that spurred the Lexington Legends to a 5-1 victory Saturday at Asheville, N.C.
Lexington loaded the bases on singles by Alex Todd and Brandon Meredith and a walk by Roberto Pena to set up Epps' grounder to right field. Pena later scored on a groundout to stake a 3-0 lead for starter Nicholas Tropeano (2-2), who had eight strikeouts and gave up two hits over seven innings.
Doubles by Matt Duffy and Brandon Meredith drove in another run in the third inning, and Zachary Johnson and Drew Muren followed in the fifth inning with a pair of doubles of their own to complete the Legends' scoring against Tourists starter Chris Jensen (2-1), who was relieved to start the sixth inning.
Meredith, the designated hitter, went 2-for-4 at the plate, and every other starter in the Legends lineup had a hit in the series opener.
The victory edged Lexington (14-15) closer to .500 after a 4-10 start.
Asheville scored its lone run when Jordan Ribera homered in the ninth inning off Murilo Gouvea.
