LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Nick Tropeano earned his fifth victory of the season, and Brandon Meredith hit his first home run as the Lexington Legends defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-1 Thursday night.
Meredith's solo shot in the second inning put the Legends in front 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, Drew Muren's sacrifice fly made it 2-0..
The Legends made it 3-0 in the fifth on another sacrifice fly, this one by Delino DeShields Jr.
Lakewood scored its only run in the sixth inning. Leadoff hitter Gauntlett Eldemire walked and scored on a triple by Alejandro Villalobos, but Tropeano came back to strike out the side, stranding Villalobos at third.
The Legends scored their final run in the seventh on DeShields' one-out single.
Tropeano (5-3) struck out six and walked three in six innings. Murilo Gouvea relieved him with two on and no outs in the seventh, but worked out of the jam.
The Legends open a three-game series in Greensboro, N.C., Friday against the Grasshoppers, who lead the South Atlantic League Northern Division.
