The Lexington Legends got off the schneid in their five-game series with Asheville on Monday night, holding off the Tourists 6-5 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Legends scored four runs in the seventh inning, and that was just enough to withstand a four-run eighth by the Tourists, who won the first three games of the series.
Lexington scored two runs off reigning South Atlantic League pitcher of the week Ben Alsup in the first inning. Delino DeShields Jr. led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Scott and scored on Zach Johnson's double. One out later, Brandon Meredith's single scored Johnson.
Asheville got a run in the third on Jared Simon's leadoff home run.
Never miss a local story.
The score remained 2-1 until the Lexington seventh. Jose Fernandez drove in two runs with a double, and DeShields made it 6-1 with his sixth home run of the year.
Legends starter Luis Ordosgoitti (2-3) yielded a run in the eighth and left with runners on second and third. Reliever Dayan Diaz allowed a two-run single, and another run scored on an error to make it 6-5. But Diaz finally got out of the inning, and he pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 10th save.
After the 7:05 p.m. conclusion of the series Tuesday, there will be a fireworks show.
