Jack Doyle’s late-game heroics weren’t quite enough to bail out the Colts on Sunday.
The former Western Kentucky Hilltopper caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Luck with just over eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter to draw Indianapolis even with Detroit at 28-all. He later reeled in a six-yard touchdown to give the Colts a 35-34 lead with 37 seconds left in the game.
But the Lions managed to drive 50 yards in 33 seconds to set up a 43-yard Matt Prater field goal. A series of laterals by the Colts on the ensuing kickoff resulted in a safety, giving Detroit a 39-35 win.
Doyle entered this season, his fourth, with 35 career catches and three touchdowns. He finished Sunday’s game with three catches and 35 yards on four targets. Winston Guy (UK) had three tackles in the loss.
Randall Cobb (UK) started the season strong in Green Bay’s 27-23 road win over Jacksonville. The former Kentucky star caught six passes for a team-high 57 yards and rushed three times for 11 yards, converting two third-downs on the ground.
Cobb moved the chains with a 32-yard catch on third-and-ten that led to a Mason Crosby field goal and a 24-17 Packers lead in the third quarter.
Later in the third quarter Cobb limped off the field after being tackled but returned to the game on the Packers’ next offensive series.
Jacob Tamme (UK) grabbed six catches for 51 yards in Atlanta’s 31-24 home loss to Tampa Bay. The former Kentucky tight end caught a ten-yard pass on fourth-and-three from midfield, preserving a Falcons drive that eventually ended with a Julio Jones touchdown catch. Tamme began the Falcons’ final drive with a 19-yard catch but couldn’t reel in quarterback Matt Ryan’s fourth-and-ten attempt.
Wesley Woodyard (UK) had three solo tackles and two quarterback hits in Tennessee’s 25-16 loss to Minnesota. The Titans defense held the Vikings offense to just three field goals; both Minnesota touchdowns were defensive scores. Harry Douglas (U of L) had two catches for 21 yards for Tennessee.
Za’Darius Smith (UK) had a solo tackle in Baltimore’s 13-7 home win over Buffalo.
Gary Barnidge (U of L) was held without a catch in Cleveland’s 29-10 loss to the Eagles. The game marked the debut of Robert Griffin III’s as Cleveland’s starting quarterback. Barnidge went over 1,000 yards receiving and caught nine touchdowns last year.
Preston Brown (U of L) had a team-high eight tackles in Buffalo’s 13-7 loss to Baltimore. The third-year linebacker also had his third career fumble recovery.
Lorenzo Mauldin (U of L) had three tackles and a sack in the New York Jets’ 23-22 loss to the Bengals.
