Lexington’s Eastern Little League All-Stars held on to defeat Bowling Green East 11-8 in London on Wednesday night to win the state championship for 12-year-olds.
It’s believed to be the first state title in 60 years for Eastern.
It’s also the first time a Lexington Little League team has advanced to a regional tournament since 1980. (Two of Lexington’s top youth baseball leagues — South Lexington and Southeastern — switched from Little League to Bambino, now Cal Ripken, in the mid-1980s.)
Never miss a local story.
Eastern weathered a last-inning rally by Bowling Green East, which scored three runs in the sixth on two home runs.
“Great kids, great players, great families,” said Eastern Little League President Jon Woodall. “It all kind of lined up for ’em. Now they go to the next phase of the goal.”
The regional tournament is Aug. 6-12 in Indianapolis, with the winner advancing to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. Woodall said ESPN, which televises the World Series, also will cover some regional tournaments this year as well.
Bowling Green East had reached the World Series each of the past two years.
