Austin Dick hit a solo home run and pitched 51⁄3 scoreless innings Saturday to help Southeastern Lexington win its opening game in the Cal Ripken Major/70 World Series for 12-year-olds at Aberdeen, Md.
Dick struck out seven and allowed two hits as Southeastern beat Clifton Park, N.Y., 5-1. Kainen Bibb joined Dick with two hits for Southeastern, which returns to action Sunday at noon against Waite Park, Minn.
SE 10-year-olds win
Southeastern Lexington's 10-year-olds also got off to a good start Saturday, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to beat New Milford, Conn., 4-3 in the Cal Ripken World Series at Winchester, Va.
Southeastern takes on Glen Allen, Va., at 7:30 p.m. Sunday as pool play continues.
LaGrange advances to Little League World Series
Kentucky will have a representative in the Little League World Series after a team from LaGrange knocked off the Ohio champions 3-0 Saturday to win the Great Lakes Regional at Indianapolis.
Griffin McLarty pitched a six-inning one-hitter, striking out 13 for LaGrange.
LaGrange plays its World Series opener at Williamsport, Pa., on Friday against the Mid-Atlantic champion at 5 p.m.
