What we'll see
The NFL's version of the Final Four offers nothing looking like a sure thing. San Francisco, which is 5-3 on the road this season, visits Atlanta, which is 8-1 at home, yet the 49ers are a four-point favorite (3 p.m., Fox-56). New England is an eight-point favorite at home against Baltimore, even though the Ravens won their Week 3 meeting and the teams' past three matchups have been decided by one, three and three points, respectively. (6:30 p.m., CBS-27)
The fifth-ranked Kentucky women's basketball team, which has hit the 100-point mark three times this season, has added a diverse offense to its traditionally potent defense and is starting to make things look ridiculously easy. UK (17-1) has won 16 games in a row and has taken its first five Southeastern Conference games by an average of 21.2 points. This week features a pair of tests of the Cats' dominance: Sunday against 13-5 Auburn (2 p.m., WKYT-27) and Thursday at 15-3 South Carolina (7 p.m., Fox Sports South).
The Herald-Leader begins unveiling the 10 finalists for the 2012 Kentucky Sportsman of the Year Award. Each day, one finalist will be revealed, leading up to the night of the announcement during the second annual Bluegrass Sports Awards ceremony sponsored by the Bluegrass Sports Commission on Jan. 31. Former Morehead State basketball standout Kenneth Faried won the award in 2011.
The UK men's basketball team finds itself amid a stretch of five SEC games that includes four on the road. How the Wildcats fare in these five might be the best measure of the progress Coach John Calipari is making with his young team. Tuesday brings a trip to Alabama (9 p.m., ESPN), which rarely is easy for the Cats. On Saturday, Kentucky is back in Rupp Arena to take on LSU (4 p.m., WKYT-27) and 2011 Kentucky Mr. Basketball Anthony Hickey.
Get a taste of March Madness in January when the All "A" Classic boys' and girls' basketball tournaments — the sweet 16s for small schools — play out at the Frankfort Convention Center. The girls tip off at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The boys do the same on Thursday.
