Just like that, we're down to a sweet 16 teams for the NCAA men's basketball championship. The East and West Regionals resume on Thursday night in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, respectively. No. 1 overall seed Louisville heads for Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where it will take on St. Louis or Oregon on Friday night in the Midwest Regional. The four remaining teams in the South Regional square off Friday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The eighth-ranked Kentucky baseball team opens a three-game Southeastern Conference series at home against Georgia (6:30 p.m.).
Kentucky's Mr. and Miss Basketball will be named during a banquet at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel in Louisville, and the smart money is on Sweet Sixteen champions Dominique Hawkins of Madison Central and Makayla Epps of Marion County. Joining Hawkins as boys' finalists are Montgomery County's Omar Prewitt, Trinity's Darryl Hicks and Bullitt East's Rusty Troutman and Derek Willis. Other girls' finalists are Madison Central's Larryn Brooks, Louisville Christian's China Dow, Owensboro Catholic's Becca Greenwell and Epps' Marion County teammate Kyvin Goodin-Rogers.
The second leg of the Kentucky Derby's new Championship Series begins with the $1 million Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds and the $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream in play as 100-point races. Revolutionary, Code West, Palace Malice and Tiz a Minister are expected to be among the top contenders in what could be a full 14-horse field in Louisiana. Herald-Leader Derby Dozen front-runner Itsmyluckyday, Fountain of Youth winner Orb and juvenile champion Shanghai Bobby lead a loaded Florida Derby. After these big Derby preps, it's only 34 days till the first Saturday in May.
