Eastern Kentucky University head soccer coach Melissa Barnes has resigned to pursue opportunities outside of coaching, Director of Athletics Steve Lochmueller announced Tuesday.
Barnes' assistant Andrew Fleming will take over the program as interim head coach, effective immediately.
"We want to thank Melissa for all the hard work and dedication that she has put into the Eastern Kentucky soccer program," Lochmueller said in a news release. "We are sad to see Melissa leave EKU, but we are very excited for her as she embarks on this exciting new chapter of her life."
Barnes, a Prospect, Ky., native, replaced Lindsay Basalyga as the program's second head coach in February 2013.
Never miss a local story.
Barnes' teams went 5-12-2 in 2013 and 4-14-1 in 2014. She coached two-time first team All-Ohio Valley Conference defender Paige Larkin (2013, 2014) and a pair of OVC All-Newcomer Team performers (Cassie Smith in 2013, Emmi Carroll in 2014).
Fleming is entering his third season as an assistant coach. He came to EKU after eight seasons at the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy.
