A team of South Lexington 12-year-old baseball all-stars will be vying for a World Series championship in Monticello, Ark., during the coming week.
South Lexington, champions of the Ohio Valley Regional, are competing in the 16-team Cal Ripken Major/60 World Series, which begins Friday and runs through Aug. 14.
South Lexington opens round-robin play Saturday against Middle Atlantic champion Cumberland County of Pennsylvania at 11 a.m. EDT.
Joining South Lexington and Cumberland County in Pool A are Littlefield (Texas) and Siloam Springs (Ark.).
South Lexington plays round-robin games Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
All 16 teams advance to single-elimination bracket play beginning Tuesday, with seeding based on round-robin results.
