Art Lander Jr.'s outdoors column does not appear in Sunday's newspaper because Art has retired after 22 years of full-time employment with the Lexington Herald-Leader.
In a career that also included about five years of part-time employment with the Lexington newspaper, Lander was honored for his journalism by the Kentucky Press Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America.
He also was named Newspaper Writer of the Year in 1981 by the Kentucky Outdoor Press Association.
Before joining the Herald-Leader full-time in 1986, Lander also was employed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Kentucky Department of Tourism.
A 1972 graduate of Western Kentucky University, Lander said his career at the Herald-Leader began ”when I just basically walked in off the street and went to Don Mills,“ who was then editor of the Lexington Herald.
He would later write primarily about fishing and hunting, Thoroughbred racing and other outdoor topics.
”I enjoyed it,“ Lander said, ”but it was pretty demanding, and I just decided it was time to retire.“
His immediate plans are to help his wife, folk artist Bonnie Lander, with her Holy Branch Gourds business and to grow vegetables for the St. Matthews Farmers Market.
Lander, 57, said he may return to full-time employment later, but not for a while.
The Landers live on a 107-acre farm near Bethlehem in Henry County.
