Central Kentucky writer wins Ryan book award

Central Kentucky writer Milton Toby's 2011 book Dancer's Image: The Forgotten Story of the 1968 Kentucky Derby (History Press, $19.99) has won the sixth annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award.

It was presented at a reception Wednesday evening at Castleton Lyons farm in Lexington.

Toby won the $10,000 prize for chronicling the controversial and disputed 1968 Derby, which remains the only Derby in which a first-place finisher was disqualified.

The award is presented annually for the best work published about an aspect of Thoroughbred racing.

The other finalists were A Marriage of Convenience by Andrew Plattner and Her Last Race by Kim Schaumburg.
