Free events at Kentucky Women Writers Conference

■ The Shadow History of Women in Hip Hop Beginning with the Black Panther Party: Sonia Sanchez series keynote with dream hampton. 7 p.m. Sept. 20. The Lyric Theatre

■ The Gypsy Poetry Slam: Live poetry competition with audience judging, featuring judge Tara Betts. 7 p.m. Sept. 21, (open-mike begins at 6:30, advance sign-ups required). Carrick Theatre, Transylvania University.

■ Eating Our Words: Keynote address by Ruth Reichl. 7 p.m. Sept. 22. Worsham Theatre, University of Kentucky Student Center.

■ Stars with Accents: Reading with Rebecca Gayle Howell, Tori Murden McClure and Nancy Jensen. 7 p.m. Sept. 23. Carnegie Center. Featuring recent guests of the radio show Accents.
