Despite the best efforts of ESPN and other outlets, golf is not a sport that has worked well at night. So, if you have a bunch of golfers in town, you need to give them something to do in the evening.
That's why a special edition of the popular Acoustic Jam country music concert is coming July 17 at the Lexington Opera House. Acoustic Jam, a round-robin songwriters' night style acoustic concert with multiple country artists, has been presented by WBUL-FM 98.1 between Thanksgiving and Christmas the past few years to raise money for Kentucky Children's Hospital.
With the Barbasol Championship at Keene Trace in Nicholasville next week, the special edition of Acoustic Jam will take the stage on a Tuesday night, when the PGA tournament will be in the midst of practice rounds before actual play gets underway Thursday, July 19.
For Murphy, it will be a bit of a Red, White & Boom preview, as he will be coming back to town, a block over, for the Labor Day weekend festival at Rupp Arena. The endurance of his signature hit, "Dust on the Bottle," was illustrated last weekend when JD Shelburne included the song in his Friday night set at the Kentucky Castle.
For Chris Lane and Maddie & Tae, it will be Acoustic Jam encores, as they appeared in 2016 and 2014, respectively. As far as we can tell, Currington, Davis and Denning will be making their first Lexington stops in some time or local debuts.
As before, proceeds from the concert will go to Kentucky Children's Hospital. In the past four years, Acoustic Jam has raised more than $400,000 for the hospital.
