A parents guide to select new movies:
'The Secret World of Arrietty'
What it's about: A rebellious wee person, a "Borrower," endangers her family and their lives inside the walls of an old house when she is seen by a sickly human-sized boy her own age.
The Kid Attractor Factor: It's anime, based on a classic children's book, The Borrowers, and it's about kids.
Good lessons/bad lessons: "Sometimes it's best not to go looking for danger."
Violence: Animated attacks by birds, nosy grownups and a cat.
Language: Disney clean.
Sex: Not on your life.
Drugs and alcohol: None.
Parents' advisory: Lovely to look at, this Studio Ghibli film is aimed strictly at the younger set — best suited to 10 and younger.
'This Means War'
Rating: PG-13 for sexual content including references, some violence and action, and for language
What it's about: Two best-friend spies court the same woman.
The Kid Attractor Factor: Lots of spy vs. spy action, and lots of winks by Star Trek's new Captain Kirk (Chris Pine).
Good lessons/bad lessons: "Don't choose the better guy. Choose the guy who's going to make you the better girl."
Violence: Lots and lots. Shootouts, a jokey torture scene, etc.
Language: A decent dose of profanity.
Sex: Yes, but not that graphic.
Drugs and alcohol: Alcohol, assorted knock-out drugs.
Parents' advisory: The adult content and the nature of the violence remind us this was edited from an R to a PG-13. Suitable for 13 and older. Barely.
