POP MUSIC: Shorter days, cooler nights: Some fine performances are headed this way

Walter Tunis

It's harvest time for sure as some of the year’s most enticing contemporary music performances head to area venues. Here are eight great reasons to celebrate the arrival of fall.

Steve Earle and the Dukes at the Lexington Opera House, Sept. 8: The Americana troubadour has been playing Lexington semi-regularly for three decades. He returns with a Dukes lineup that includes the expert duo The Mastersons as opening act and band members.

The BoDeans at Christ the King Oktoberfest, Sept. 11: While the longstanding Wisconsin band is led exclusively these days by co-founder Kurt Neumann, it continues to release strong roots-informed rock ‘n’ roll recordings, like the new I Can’t Stop. That this is a free Oktoberfest show is a bonus.

The Avett Brothers and Jason Isbell at Rupp Arena, Oct. 1: No disrespect to the jam-savvy Avetts, but letting Isbell and the sublime songs from one of the year’s best recordings, Something More Than Free, loose at Rupp is the real treat here.

Chick Corea and Bela Fleck at the EKU Center for the Arts, Oct. 1: Two generations of fusion music meet in an acoustic setting with the novel instrumental makeup of piano and banjo. This will mark Corea’s first Central Kentucky visit in ages.

Lake Street Dive at Cosmic Charlie’s, Oct. 5: The breakthrough pop act of 2014, this Boston quartet comes loaded with powerhouse singing, cunning songs and a tireless but mature performance spirit.

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell at the Opera House, Oct. 18: Compadres in one of Harris’ early Hot Band lineups, these two Americana stylists have created some of the most stirring music of recent years in or out of Nashville .

Town Mountain, The Travelin’ McCourys and The Wooks at the Breeders Cup Festival, Oct. 28: The cream of the Breeders Cup Festival concert crop presented downtown at Courthouse Plaza is this triple bill of world class bluegrass. Another of the fall’s great free deals .

Iris DeMent at the Lyric Theatre, Dec. 14: The WoodSongs Old-Time Hour wraps up fall — and, in all likelihood, its performance year — with this powerfully emotive Americana songstress and music from her splendid new album, The Trackless Woods.
