American Idol auditions are coming to Kentucky for the first time. The Fox television series will hold ”an initial round of preliminary auditions“ with the show's producers on July 21 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Potential contestants can register and pick up armbands July 19 and 20.
During follow-up auditions in early September at Churchill Downs, the show's judges — led by the famously snarky Simon Cowell — will assess those who made it through the first round and choose the performers who will advance.

The auditions for season 8 of the ratings juggernaut begin July 17 in San Francisco. Other cities on the audition circuit, announced Thursday, are Phoenix; Salt Lake City; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Kansas City, Mo.; Jacksonville, Fla.; and East Rutherford, N.J.
In previous years, the nearest city where Kentucky singers could audition included Birmingham, Ala., and Atlanta.
Kentucky has never produced an Idol winner.
