The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras' current assistant conductor Dan Chetel will become the organization's new music director.
Chetel succeeds Kayoko Dan, who is leaving the orchestra to become the new music director of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. Chetel was a candidate for the youth orchestras' top post two years ago when Dan was hired. He joined the staff when he came to the University of Kentucky to pursue a doctorate in conducting.
Chetel holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's from the University of Maryland School of Music.
In addition to his youth orchestra duties, in Lexington, Chetel has served as assistant conductor of the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, conductor of the UK Opera's under graduate studio productions and as a cover conductor for the Lexington Philharmonic and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The announcement of his appointment was made at Sunday's youth orchesra season finale concert, which was Dan's final performance as music director.
