John Phillip Sousa IV, great-grandson of famed musician John Phillip Sousa, will be grand marshal of the June 11 parade for the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, officials announced Thursday.
Sousa will also speak at the festival's history conference on June 10 at Danville High School. The conference will have a strong focus on the music and life of Sousa.
Sousa was a former U.S. Marine Band leader who composed and conducted some of the most well-known marches in the world. He composed Semper Fidelis, the official song of the Marine Corps, and he is best known for composing Stars and Stripes Forever, which was designated in 1987 as the National March of the United States. He died in 1932 at age 77.
