Three singers from Kentucky District advance in Metropolitan Opera auditions

A 22-year-old University of Kentucky student is among three aspiring singers who will advance to the next round of competition following the Metropolitan Opera National Council Kentucky District Auditions held Saturday at UK.

Soprano Rachel Sterrenberg, of Madison, Ga., advances to the Mid-South Regional Round, to be held in Germantown, Tenn., on Feb. 11.

Also advancing are Thomas Gunther, 28, a baritone from Muscatine, Iowa, and Vincent Turregano, 24, a baritone from Alexandria, La.

Three encouragement awards were given on Saturday, including one to Reginald Smith Jr., 23, a baritone pursuing a bachelor's degree at UK. Smith, of Atlanta, won last year's Kentucky District and placed third at regionals.

Other encouragement awards went to Rebecca Farley, a 21-year-old soprano from Henderson who is studying at UK, and Xi Wang, a 28-year-old soprano from Zheng-zhou, China.

Thirty singers, including 10 current or former UK students, participated in the competition.

Singers nationwide are competing to win a spot in a Grand Finals Concert, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Five Grand Winners will receive $15,000 each.
