Keeneland's Fall Meet opens today, and the craft beer tent will return to the North Terrace each Friday and Saturday, through Oct. 25. Brands on tap include Alltech's Kentucky Kolsch, Country Boy's Cougar Bait and Keeneland Sale Ale (if there is any left.)
■ There's another chance to enjoy bourbon and racing together, this time with a helping of Kentucky Wildcat football: The Lexington Bourbon Society's "Sips, Whips & Kicks" event started Thursday and continues through Saturday. You can go to Keeneland opening day where you get a box lunch from Shorty's Market and reserved seats. Saturday, there's UK vs. South Carolina, with a barbecue tailgate party in Commonwealth Stadium's Green Lot and the game on TV. ■ Tickets also are still available for The Bourbon Social, Oct. 10 to 12, at thebourbonsocial.com. The event includes parties, seminars and distillery brunches through the weekend at Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton and elsewhere.
■ At 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8, O'Neill's Irish Pub, 2051 Richmond Road, will host the Halfway to St. Patrick's Day celebration. The event, a fundraiser for the Lexington Sister Cities student scholarship fund, features McTeggart Irish Dancers, bagpiper Kevin Murray, Liam's Fancy Irish Music, a silent auction and lamb stew and brown bread by Chef Mary Parlanti. Admission is $10 and includes stew, bread and entertainment.
■ Central Kentucky chef Ouita Michel (Holly Hill Inn, Smithtown Seafood, Midway School Bakery, etc.) also will be on the Mind of a Chef with Ed Lee on KET. They make a dish with two Kentucky ingredients: smoke and spoonbill caviar. The episode will air Monday at 1:30 p.m. on KET2 and Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Check listings for more times.
■ The October menu for the Greentree Tea Room, 521 West Short Street, will feature Roasted Red Pepper Soup, Gingerbread Scone with Orange Marmalade and Honey Butter, Broccoli and Smoked Gouda Frittata, Egg Salad Cups, Tuna Salad and Olive Nut Tea Sandwiches, Pumpkin Cookies, Bourbon Chocolate Pots de Crème and Carrot Cupcakes and Earl Grey Tea. ■ The Bluegrass Farmers' Market this week will have tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, squash, peppers, potatoes, onions, baked goods, jams, meats, eggs, herb seasoning, and more.
