'Psychopaths' and socialites

When we first meet screenwriter Marty Faranan, played by Colin Farrell in the movie Seven Psychopaths, he's working on a script called Seven Psychopaths, but all he has is a title. In the real movie, which is funny, grim and bloody, Marty ends up meeting crazier characters than he thinks he can imagine (or can he?).

The film from playwright-screenwriter-director Martin McDonagh also stars three of the screen's great character actors, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. Abbie Cornish and "Bond girl" Olga Kurylenko are there for more than their killer looks, and there are some often amusing cameos from Harry Dean Stanton, Kevin Corrigan, Gabourey Sidibe, Tom Waits and Zeljko Ivanek.

What's the film about? Your guess is as good as mine, but if you have a liking for violent comedies, Seven Psychopaths will do the trick. It's not for the faint of heart, though.

Seven Psychopaths retails for $30.99 or $35.99 Blu-ray.

For those looking for something more genteel, there's Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, Season 3, which wraps up Feb. 17 on PBS stations, including KET. Upstairs and downstairs the intrigue continues, but I'm not sure I'm as infatuated as I once was with where creator Julian Fellowes has taken the show. There will be no spoilers here for as we know, there will be a Season 4. So maybe Season 3 is just part of a setup for next year.

Still, Downton has been enjoyable, and it was a clever stroke to bring in Shirley MacLaine as Cora's American mother as a counterpart to Maggie Smith's very British dowager countess. Watching the two veteran actresses go up against each other was a treat.

Downton Abbey, Season 3 retails for $49.99 or $54.99 Blu-ray.
