Three private colleges got Kentucky’s highest national spots in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 rankings of colleges and universities, while the University of Kentucky was 116th among the best national universities, far behind UK’s goal of becoming a Top 20 public research university.
UK moved up six spots from a year ago among top public and private universities. Among public universities, UK was 57th.

Meanwhile, among the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, Kentucky’s top-ranked institutions were No. 45 Centre College, No. 68 Berea College and No. 77 Transylvania University, which made a gain of 10 places from a year ago.
U.S. News also ranked Centre 17th and Transylvania 31st among the ”best values“ category titled ”Great Schools, Great Prices.“
In addition, Berea was 7th among ”Schools to Watch“ for improvements and innovations; among the 14 best schools for internships; and among the 25 best schools for ”Service Learning“ — volunteer work in the community.
Louisville’s Bellarmine University tied for 16th among the South’s best master’s degree universities.
Kentucky State University ranked 30th among 70 in Best Black Colleges.
The rankings will be in U.S. News & World Report’s Sept 1 issue, on newsstands Monday, and are scheduled to be online Friday at www.usnews.com/colleges.
