Police searching for missing inmate

State police are searching for an inmate who walked away from the Frankfort Career Development Center on Monday.

Police say two minimum-security inmates — John Alstatt, 53, and Robert Fritz, 28 — were reported missing about 10:20 p.m. Monday.

Fritz was apprehended about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday by police in Evansville, Ind., after crashing a truck that police say the inmates stole in Frankfort. Fritz was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail in Evansville.

Alstatt fled the scene of the crash on foot, and police are still searching for him.

State police said Fritz had been serving a 10-year sentence for charges that include identity theft, fraudulent use of credit cards and being a persistent felony offender.

Alstatt had been serving a seven-year sentence for a theft charge . He was also a persistent felony offender.

Alstatt, who would have served out his sentence in less than two months, is described as a white man, 6-foot-3, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Both men will face charges in connection with their escape and the stolen vehicle, state police said.
