Pedestrian killed on New Circle Road

Lexington police say that alcohol may have been involved in a collision on New Circle Road Sunday night that killed a pedestrian and severely injured another.

According to witnesses and police, Michael R. Stamper and Joy Michelle Cummins were crossing New Circle Road from the center median near Bryan Station Road when they were struck by a red 1999 Toyota Matrix at 8:53 p.m.

In a statement, police said the Matrix, driven by Michael D. Roberts, 33, of Lexington, continued on for about 1,000 feet after the collision.

Stamper, 56, was killed by the impact.

Cummins was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Information about Cummins' condition was not available Monday evening, a UK Hospital spokeswoman said.

Police released the names of the driver and the pedestrians on Monday. A news release stated that police were investigating whether to criminally charge Roberts. The release also stated that alcohol is suspected in the crash.

Police declined to comment further.
