Danville woman burned in home fire has died

DANVILLE — A Danville woman who was badly burned in a Friday afternoon fire in a mobile home has died.

Debbie Burton, 48, died Monday night at University of Kentucky Hospital after suffering burns on about 80 percent of her body, according to the Fayette County Coroner's Office.

Burton lived in the mobile home with her sister, who was not home at the time of the fire, and about 25 to 28 cats, Danville Fire Chief Mike Thomas said. At least 22 cats died of smoke inhalation from the fire at Imperial Mobile Home Park. It was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Friday.

"My understanding is that Debbie did have some mental handicaps," Thomas said. He said she had also had had "previous automobile accidents and had not fully recovered from those as well."

Thomas said Danville police, the fire department and the state fire marshal's office are investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to have been accidental.

Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville is handling funeral arrangements.
