A Lexington man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a man found outside a bar in July.
Yves M. Garner, 31, was charged Wednesday night in the slaying of Henry Means, 35, who was shot multiple times and found about 11:30 p.m. July 20 outside the Around the Korner bar on Anniston Drive, off Eastland Parkway.
Means was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he died.
Garner also has been charged with tampering with physical evidence, Lexington police said. He is being held at the Fayette County jail.
Garner entered a not guilty plea Thursday during an arraignment in Fayette District Court. The judge appointed him an attorney and scheduled his next court appearance for Nov. 20.
Witnesses at the scene told police Garner intentionally shot Means, according to documents filed in Fayette District Court. Garner took the gun allegedly used in the killing away from the scene, which led to the tampering charge, documents say.
Police have not released a motive in the shooting.
According to court documents, Garner's arrest, about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, followed a series of events including a traffic violation Wednesday afternoon.
Garner was driving a black 2001 Chevrolet Impala about 5 p.m. Wednesday when police stopped him near Yellowstone Parkway and Sterlington Road. He was charged with excessive window tinting on the driver's side and not having insurance, court records say.
About 5:50 p.m., detectives searched Garner's apartment at 2852 Snow Road and found digital scales and plastic bags. He was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, court records say.
"It was just a normal traffic stop to begin with for the excessive window tinting, and that led into the search warrants being obtained and the drug paraphernalia charge," said Officer Ann Gutierrez, a Lexington police spokeswoman. "It was really all unrelated to the murder investigation."
Using information from the community, police later connected Garner to the murder, Gutierrez said.
Garner is being held at the Fayette County jail on a $103,195 bond.
