WACO — School and county health officials confirmed Thursday that a student at Waco Elementary School has been diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.
On Thursday, Madison County Health Department officials notified parents of students in close contact with the student about the diagnosis. Other students received a letter to take home to their parents that explained the situation.

This is the second case of whooping cough that has been identified in Madison County this month. The first case was identified at Shannon Johnson Elementary School in Richmond on Dec. 2.
