One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting in the driveway of a Madison County home.
The shooting suspect, David Daugherty, 43, allegedly shot Shane Adkins, 34, about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday after following his vehicle several miles from Jackson County, Madison Sheriff Nelson O'Donnell said. Adkins was pronounced dead an hour later at the Berea hospital.
Investigators are still trying to find a motive for the shooting, he said.
It appears that somewhere along the route in Madison County, Daugherty's passenger had an oral confrontation with Adkins. They followed behind for several miles.
Adkins pulled into the driveway of a home at 5551 Battlefield Memorial Highway, or U.S. 421, outside Berea. His passenger, a 21-year-old woman, lived there, and they were going to exchange cars, O'Donnell said.
Daugherty pulled into the driveway blocking it.
Adkins got out of his vehicle with a baseball bat, and Daugherty got out of his with a 12-gauge shotgun and fired, O'Donnell said.
Daugherty allegedly fled but was contacted later through his mobile telephone. He had called the house where the shooting occurred looking for the woman. Police called back and persuaded him to give himself up about 8 a.m. at a nearby Shell gas station, O'Donnell said.
They are still looking for his passenger, the sheriff added.
