Stumbo asks for ethics inquiry into his business dealings

FRANKFORT — Newly elected House Speaker Greg Stumbo wants the Legislative Ethics Commission to investigate his dealings with businesses that have interests before the state legislature.

He said the ethics commission will find no problems. If it does, he said, he would not remain a legislator.

Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, made a rare floor speech Friday to comment on a story in that morning's edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader about his business involvements.

Stumbo said the story was "not responsible journalism" and that the headline incorrectly "suggested something was amiss."

Lexington Herald-Leader Editor and Vice President Linda Austin said "the story speaks for itself."

Many of Stumbo's colleagues in the House gave him a standing ovation.
