The Lexington Derby Ball, one of Lexington's swankiest Kentucky Derby Eve affairs, has been canceled because of economic concerns, organizers say.
The annual event, held at Donamire Farm, raises money for the Lexington Cancer Foundation, which gives money to an assortment of cancer research and treatment centers in Lexington.
"We feel that in light of the current economy, this is the most responsible way to be diligent stewards of the funds that have been entrusted to us," a press release said.
The foundation is making plans for a Derby party in 2010. This year, it will go forward with plans for the Hats and Handbags for Life fund-raiser April 9 and the Kentucky Bluegrass Wine Auction on April 30.
