Man shot in chest made up explanation, police say

A man who was shot in the chest in an apartment on Winburn Drive on Monday afternoon concocted a false story about how it happened, Lexington police said.

Hugo Cesar Velasquez Coronado, 25, was accidentally shot with a handgun by his brother, Carlos Moises Velasquez, 23, police said.

Police were originally told that someone knocked on the door of the brothers' apartment at 1218 Winburn Drive, and that when Coronado opened the door, someone shot him.

Coronado, who also initially gave police a fake name, has been charged with falsely reporting an incident. He was listed in serious condition the University of Kentucky Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

His brother, Velasquez, has been charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Lexington Police Detective Shannon Garner said there were some other people in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but no further charges are expected.
