The body of an infant was found Thursday afternoon in Hillcrest Memorial Park at 2089 Versailles Road by a woman who apparently walks in the cemetery every day, Lexington police said.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine whether the baby, which appeared to be premature, was born alive and if so, how the baby died, said Lexington Police Lt. Edward Hart.
Police were called to the scene about 2:50 p.m.
The unclothed infant was found at the back of the cemetery, which is bordered by several apartment complexes.

The body might have been dumped over a fence bordering the cemetery property, Hart said.
He said police are canvassing the apartment complexes in the area to see if anyone knows about anyone who had been expecting a child.
Authorities also have contacted all hospitals in Fayette County and major medical facilities in surrounding counties to be on the lookout for a woman with medical issues related to having given birth, but with no baby, Hart said.
