Scores add up for Lexington Mathletes

Two Winburn Middle School students took top honors at the state Mathcounts competition held Saturday at the Holiday Inn North in Lexington.

Valerie Sarge and Vania Ma took first and second place, respectively, out of 154 "mathletes" participating. Douglas Yang of Meyzeek Middle School in Louisville took third place, followed by Jared Wittrock of Campbell County Middle School. The top four students were awarded four-year scholarships to the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville and will go on to compete in the national Mathcounts competition in Orlando in May.

Other top students from Lexington included Elaine Lin of Beaumont Middle School, who took sixth place, and Jessie Li of Lexington Traditional Magnet School, who won tenth place.

Andrew Liu of Meyzeek was awarded fifth place, Dutch Dohrenwend and Josh Hicks of Owensboro Middle School won seventh and eighth, respectively, and Austin Merchant of Gayle Gray Middle School in Boone County took ninth.

Of 27 teams competing, the Meyzeek Middle School team won first place overall, followed by the Winburn team, LTMS, Gayle Gray Middle School, Owensboro Middle School, SCAPA Bluegrass, Boyle County Middle School, Samuel V. Noe Middle School, Anchorage Public School and Woodford County Middle School.
